The History of Legend of Zelda’s Triforce
The Triforce is basically the iconic symbol at the heart of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series. Imagine three golden triangles coming together to form a bigger triangle—that’s the Triforce. Each of those smaller triangles represents Power, Wisdom, and Courage.
According to the game’s lore, these were created by three Golden Goddesses: Din (Power), Nayru (Wisdom), and Farore (Courage). After they crafted the land of Hyrule, they left the Triforce behind as a symbol of their combined essences.
Now, here’s the cool part: the Triforce grants a wish to anyone who possesses it. But there’s a catch—if the person doesn’t embody all three virtues equally, the Triforce splits into its three pieces. Each piece then seeks out someone who best represents that virtue. That’s why throughout the series, Ganon, the villain, often ends up with the Triforce of Power, Princess Zelda with Wisdom, and Link with Courage.
The Triforce symbol actually has roots in real-world history. It looks a lot like the emblem of the Hōjō clan from medieval Japan, known as the “mitsuuroko” or “three scales.” Cool stuff.
Since the original game launched in 1986, the Triforce has been central to the series, driving the quests and challenges our heroes face. It’s become a legendary symbol that continues to influence the stories and themes in all the Zelda games that have come out since.
The Zelda Triforce Puzzle
Rich with history, The Zelda Triforce Puzzle by Hanayama is a metal puzzle in shape of the inconic Zelda Triforce. When I discovered this collaboration of Hanayama and Nintendo, I was pleasantly surprised. Two giants from two different niches I love so much work together to bring us this amazing looking puzzle!
The 3 pieces of the Triforce are interlocked with a 4th smaller piece trapped inside, and your goal is to take them apart, and then put them back together. The puzzle itself is not too hard, and reminds me of some other puzzle from Hanayama…
For a level 5 Hanayama, Cast Triforce was super easy. Although, the mechanism is really nice to play with, and I love triangles, Triforce aside. The pieces, as always with Hanayama, are of great build quality and finish, they make nice clunk noises when they hit one another (which happens… all the time!) and are quite challenging to learn and understand.
