Key&Keyway Cube
Yo what is up guys, it’s Greg.
The Key&Keyway Cube is the first puzzle design by John Kelly from Logic Puzzles. I first saw this puzzle in the end of 2020 and immediately sensed it was different. So I got in touch with John and we’ve been talking since then. Later on, he kindly sent me a copy.
When I solved the Key&Keyway Cube… I knew.
It’s getting a review.
Observing Keys & Watching Keyways
The first thing I noticed about Key&Keyway cube, after you remove the 8 pieces from their bag, is the quality. Surprisingly, it is printed via a 3D printer. If you own one, John also sells .stl files to these on his site – although it’ll be very hard to replicate this print quality.
The Key&Keyway cube is a hybrid between assembly and interlocking puzzles.
You have eight pieces with key and keyways on them , and your goal is to combine them all to a 2x2x2 cube– so all the keys are fully engaged and hidden inside.
No rotations, force, or removal of screws.
In order to combine two pieces, you need to insert them into each other, and then slide them until they lock.
Key&Keyway Cube Solving Experience
The K&K Cube has a simple objective. With such a simple objective, you’d think the solution is just a simple move. Or just a simple trick.
No!
The solution is a journey.
In this journey, you start confused, with zero knowledge. The more you observe and play around with it, the more you undersand.
It requires analysis, spacial imagination and some trial and error until you can get the right configuration…
…And good luck from there on.
A hour was needed for me to solve it. I was laser focused, and enjoyed every moment. The clicks, the quality, the moves, added a lot to the solving experience.
And the solution… was a delight!
Summing Up
Thus, the Key&Keyway Cube is best for….
Wanderers.
Low price, high quality, great solution.
Not too hard, not easy at the least.
This design is exactly what a wanderer needs.
I would recommend it to champions as well, as the mechanics and solution, are as I said, a big delight to play through.
My 50 cents? Keep an eye out on John. If this is his first puzzle design, I can’t wait to see what’s next.
